At Hadleigh Park, we offer a range of course to develop your skills and competences. Which will expand your knowledge; increase what you can deliver to the pupils. Whilst fulfilling your Continuous Professional Development needs.

Axe and Billhook Skills Workshop

Course Details

A day course to provide you, with the skills and knowledge to safely and effectively cut wood using edge tools.  Experience the difference between cutting, green wood and seasoned wood. Learn how smoothly and easily to cut through knots, remove wood quickly and safely in a controlled way.  Use different tools to cut with, to feel the different cut finishes they create.  And which best suits the task you wish to do. Understand why where you cut in the wood, can make it easy or hard to carry out your intended task. You may bring your own hand tools if you wish.

Natural string and cordage

Course Details

Discover a world of natural fibres, hidden in the plants commonly found in the countryside.  You will learn how to easily extract, and work these materials into string. Then practice the skill of making withies, from a thin tree branch.  Take some fibres home and impress your pupils.

Winter Tree Identification

Course Details

A one day courses taking a close look at the process to identify native trees and shrubs without their leaves present. Half the day will focus on the use of a field ID Key. To look at the twigs close up, to identify them. The other half of the day will focus on clues from the surrounding environment to provide the clues.

Sharpening (Level 1)

Course Details

A half day course, to provide you with the background knowledge, of how a cutting edge works and what happens to it when it is sharpened. Learn the skills required to successfully maintain a razor sharp cutting edge, either in the field or in a workshop.  Using a hand held or sharpening stone. Whilst creating the habit of sharpening safely wherever you are. NB: you will heed to bring a knife or other cutting tool with to sharpen.

Sharpening (Level 2)

Course Details

A half day course to provide the background knowledge of how a cutting edge works and what happens when it becomes damaged.  Learn the skills necessary to remove the damage (using hand tools only), and return it to a razor sharp cutting edge, either in the field or in a workshop. Gain understanding of what happens when you sharpen a cutting edge. Look at the single and double grinds, and there purposes.  Whilst learning the habit of safe sharpening practices, in the workshop or in the field.

(If you have any cutting tools which you wish to restore a cutting edge too, or sharpen completely from scratch.  Or just want advice on how to sharpen them. Please feel free to bring them along.)
